Homemade Sweetened Condensed Milk Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (240 ml) whole milk
  • 1 cup (200 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk and sugar.
  2. Set the pan over medium heat and stir continuously until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Once dissolved, bring the mixture to a light simmer.
  4. Turn the heat down to low and cook for 30–40 minutes, stirring from time to time to prevent sticking or scorching.
  5. As it simmers, the milk will reduce and become noticeably thicker and creamier.
  6. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Add the butter and stir until fully melted and smooth.
  7. If using, mix in the vanilla extract at the end for added flavor.
  8. Allow the condensed milk to cool, then pour it into clean jars.
  9. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
