Natural Steam Iron Cleaner

Step-by-Step Instructions to Clean an Iron

  1. Mix the cleaning paste
In a small bowl, combine equal parts white vinegar and water. Stir in enough baking soda to form a spreadable paste, then add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.

  2. Apply the paste to the soleplate
Ensure the iron is unplugged and completely cool. Using a soft cloth, gently spread the paste over the iron’s plate (soleplate). Avoid pushing the mixture into the steam holes.

  3. Let it sit, then wipe clean
Leave the paste on for a few minutes. Wipe it off with a damp cloth or towel. If any residue is stuck around the steam vents, remove it carefully with a cotton swab.

  4. Clean the steam vents with a steam cycle
Fill the iron’s water tank with a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar. Turn on the iron and let it steam, then empty the reservoir. Refill with clean water only and steam again to flush out any remaining vinegar.

  5. Finish with a final wipe
Once the iron cools, wipe the soleplate again to ensure no paste or residue remains before using it on clothes.
