How to Make Pure Homemade Coconut Oil (No Chemicals)
Making fresh coconut oil at home is easier than you might think. Using just mature coconuts and warm water, you can create a natural, chemical-free coconut oil that works beautifully for cooking, skincare, and hair care.

Ingredients
- 2–3 mature coconuts (brown husk, not green)
- 4 cups warm water
Step-by-Step Instructions
1) Extract Fresh Coconut Milk
- Crack open the coconuts and remove the white coconut meat.
- Grate the coconut meat, or blend it into small pieces.
- Add the warm water, then blend again until the mixture looks rich and creamy.
- Strain through a cheesecloth (or a fine strainer lined with cloth) to separate the coconut milk from the pulp.
2) Let the Coconut Milk Ferment Naturally
- Pour the fresh coconut milk into a clean glass bowl or jar.
- Cover it (loosely is fine) and leave it in a warm place for 24–48 hours.
- As it rests, the mixture will naturally separate into layers—including oil, water, and cream.
3) Separate and Collect the Coconut Oil
- Gently skim off the top coconut cream layer.
- Heat the remaining liquid on low heat for about 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Once the oil separates and turns a light golden color, strain it into a clean glass jar.
How to Store and Use Homemade Coconut Oil
- Store your coconut oil in a glass container in a cool, dry place.
- Shelf life is typically 6 months to 1 year, depending on cleanliness and storage conditions.
- Common uses include:
- Cooking and baking
- Moisturizing skin and dry areas
- Hair masks and scalp care
- Oil pulling (traditional oral care routine)
Tips for Better Coconut Oil Results
- Choose fully mature coconuts to get a higher oil yield.
- Prefer a no-heat method? Chill the coconut milk and scoop the solidified oil once it separates.
- For a personalized beauty oil, mix in a few drops of a skin-safe essential oil for a light fragrance.
